Hey there. It’s Tuesday. Meaning we made it through Monday. Hopefully. Meaning we’re one day closer to another weekend. Thankfully! While I’m not working for the weekends, necessarily, my plate is full enough Monday-Friday, to have me eagerly awaiting some much needed weekly downtime.
If you’re thinking it’s been a while since you’ve seen more than a Monday covers post, you are correct. Launching a new company is time consuming, mind consuming, and energy consuming. All three have been in short supply for the last several weeks. I’ve missed sharing music, and I’ve missed you.
Two For Tuesday!
This week’s playlist launches with Evan Oldenburg, a DIY musician out of Michigan. He showed up in my Discover Weekly playlist, and I immediately fell in love with the emotion and energy of “Skipping Stones.” It’s a rather dark, but there’s a hopefulness in the delivery, despite the dark description. I can’t explain it. It’s that hopefulness mired in anger that many of us feel during/after a breakup. I guess you need to hear it to see if you feel it the same way!
We go in another direction entirely with The Courettes. It’s still dark and dirty, but there’s the addition of bluesy 60’s dance and doo-wop. I’m not always a big fan of garage revival music, but this gets two thumbs up. Its pace, energy, and the layer of darkness and grunge on “You Woo Me” is sublime. So good!
Taking the third slot in today’s slate of five bands, we’ve got Slothtrust. They’re taking up the new(ish) to me spot this week. While I’ve saved several of their songs to my Liked Songs playlist, I don’t believe I’ve yet shared them here (I know Lou will straighten me out if I’m incorrect, LOL). “Once More For The Ocean” is the song that finally made me take action and share them with you. The band has been around for ten+ years, so a deeper dive into their discography is on my to-listen list.
Next up is Fiona-Lee. With only two singles to share, she’s taking the new slot this week. Her voice is gorgeous. The subject matter is smart and relevant. This artist is going to create gorgeous things for years to come, fingers crossed. I hope I’m updating you with a full-length release in the near future!
Rounding out this week’s five bands is Kid Tigrrr. This solo project from singer-songwriter Jenna Fournier will appeal to those who enjoy atmospheric and ethereal shoegaze sounds. It’s gentle and lilting, with just enough edge to keep it from being too sweet. The lyrics add darkness to the lightness of the sound, creating a killer juxtaposition. “Skin” is a track I can see myself listening to on sleepy, reflective Saturday and Sunday mornings. How about you?
The Playlist
I hope my return to music discovery and sharing falls upon some receptive ears as I get back into the swing. Did any of the ten songs stand out enough for you to make and addition to one of your playlists? Let me know. I love to hear what you think!
All of these gave something to like. I liked The Courettes the most out of the bunch. Slothrust a close 2nd. That might be a function of being at work and the more upbeat songs fit the vibe better.
Evan Oldenburg sounds just like Billie Jo Armstrong from Green Day to me :) Not a bad thing if you're trying to make it as a singer. He lives only about an hour from me; I wonder If he's playing nearby some time.
I'll check these out after Dylan-Lone Justice-Soccer Mommy-Pixies. Thanks!
