It’s Monday. Another work week looms before us. I thought it might be nice to start the week off with a little music, in the form of a multiple versions Monday selection.
Annachie Gordon
I need to give a shoutout to Chris Barton (chrisbarton62 on Threads) for his timely share of this Scottish standard last week. Though the version he shared is not one of my favorites, I’ve added it to the playlist as it may appeal to one of you.
This is a standard, and sad, folk song about a father forcing his daughter to marry the “better” suitor, despite her deep and abiding love for the handsome, but poor, Annachie. It’s haunting and horrifying in equal measure, while also being an incredibly beautiful story.
The song doesn’t need a lot of introduction from me, so we’ll get right to the listening!

Which version is your favorite? While I’m a BIG fan of the Loreena McKennitt take, Fintan McHugh is sneaking closer to toppling Ms. Mc out of the top spot.
The Unthanks is my fave. Spotify isn’t playing nicely with Substack on my iPhone but I got there.
Lovely and moving song! If I had to choose a favorite version, 'twould be Ian Coles, but all five are terrific.
