Yesterday I shared my 24-song Christmas Song advent/countdown. And I received several lovely comments. Thanks!
It’s Day 9, which means it’s time to share “Blue Christmas.” I chose the Bright Eyes version for the countdown. But it’s Monday, so that means multiple versions are getting shared. These are my favorites, but there are MANY versions. Let me know if yours didn’t make the list!
Blue Christmas
This holiday classic was originally recorded by Doye O'Dell in 1948. While Elvis’ version is undoubtedly the most popular, it’s not my favorite, though I like it enough to add it to the playlist.
This song certainly lends itself to a twangy country-western delivery, and it’s been oft-covered by country artists like Jim Reeves and Vince Gill, though I chose Tammy Wynette for this playlist.

There you go. Day nine DONE! While I chose the Conor Oberst version for my advent, my favorite is by the incomperable Chris Isaak. He’s a fabulous crooner, but he manages to come across as genuine, rather than schmaltzy. I also really enjoy the version by The Lumineers.
How about you? Is this song even on your top list? If so, who sings your favorite rendition?
I didn’t think I liked this song - the Elvis and Mud versions I’ve heard the most leave me cold - but I actually like a few of these, particularly Sharon Van Etten.
Chris Isaak’s version is fantastic!
