Let me start out by saying that I’m not now, nor was I in the past, a big fan of, or regular listener of, Spoon. I have nothing against them, and I can appreciate their talent, and their importance to many of you. But they never moved beyond the back burner for me.
That being said, I was asked to create a starter list, and I put in the listening time to do so. I spent a week and a half, off and on, between other listens, digging deep through the Spoon discography, to select ten songs that made a lasting impression. This was back in November. And then I sat on it.
I wondered if I should do a starter list for a band that I didn’t absolutely love. It’s not that I don’t like the band. During my intensive listen, I became a real fan of several songs, adding them to my liked list, and listening to the starter list several times in December. Realizing that I truly enjoyed “Jonathan Fisk” and “Car Radio,” “Stay Don’t Go” and “Quincy Punk Episode,” I came to a realization.
Some people looking to these starter lists know very little about these bands. Just because they’re not a long-time listen doesn’t mean I can’t weigh in on then ten songs that I like best, sprinkled through their vast and varied discography. So I’m publishing it this morning.
Here they are. The ten songs I’d suggest starting with, if you’re looking to get into Spoon, based on my taste and the songs fitting in with the rest of my liked list, meaning they’re songs I truly enjoy, no matter how they stack up against the band’s most played and most listened tunes.

Spoon fans, how’d I do? And those who haven’t long been Spoon diehards, did you find something to add to your liked list? Chime in with a comment!
This is a great sampler of the band for anyone new to their work. I'm not sure a "definitive" overview is possible to make- this is a band that almost gleefully makes it hard to define their sound.
I might've added something from They Want My Soul and/or Lucifer on the Sofa, but I'm also biased toward both records.
P.S. 'Car Radio' is a fantastic pick--one of their best tracks, IMO.
