It’s Thursday! The work week is almost over. And we’ve got just one more full work week (many of us, at least) before the holiday break leading into the new year.
I’m winding things up at work and I’m deeply embroiled in making the final decisions about the fifty albums I plan to share as this year’s Top 50 countdown (coming the last week in December 2024/first week in January 2025).
But I’m still tuning in to new releases. And I’m still on board to find great new artists and listens.
What Have We Got This Week?
It’s been a while since I’ve shared one of these. It’s been difficult for me to settle into a rhythm while also launching my new business. Balance is never easy, but I’m really hoping to settle into a sustainable routine. Huge thanks to all of you who have stuck with me despite my sporadic publishes.
Let’s dive into the music! This week’s playlist launches with The Jack Knives. They create power pop with grit, a bit of garage, and some Americana thrown in (funnily enough, they manage this with a Brit singer). It’s easy to compare them to The Gaslight Anthem. I’d say it’s a bit more polished, a bit poppier, and a little less rough around the edges. Don’t get me wrong, those are the things I love about TGA.
Sliding into the number two spot, we’ve got female-fronted power pop hearkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s from senses. The sound reminds me of K’s Choice, Tracy Bonham, and maybe a bit of Alanis Morissette. It’s fun listening. Let me know if you agree.
Rounding out this week’s playlist is Walt Phelan. I don’t know who to use as a comparison, if you do share the info! I love the light vocal delivery paired with the peppy guitar sound. It’s lighthearted without being fluffy, while discussing hard topics. A real juxtaposition. It’s killing me that I can’t come up with who he reminds me of. ARGHHHHHH!
The Playlist
It’s time for me to get back to my Top 50 Albums determinations. I hope these nine listens make for a fun little listening interlude while you finish up 2024 and prep for 2025. Let me know if you make any additions to your own playlists!
Listening now! The Jack Knives definitely have a similar sound to a more polished Gaslight Anthem!
