Three Artists + Three Songs To Decide If They're Your Cup Of Tea
We’re nearing the end of the week. It’s been a bit of an odd one for me. I felt unfocused, which is not normal. I’m one of the most structured and organized creatives you’ll ever have the pleasure (or lack thereof if structure isn’t your thing) you’ll ever meet. But I’ve felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants this week. It’s an odd feeling.
I’m in the midst of a decent life restructuring. Being unjobbed for nearly two months (we’re fine, we can and do live frugally; though I’ve really missed digging through crates at the record store) has made me think, a lot.
Before returning to the corporate world in 2020, I spent more than ten years running my own marketing agency. And before that, I freelanced for another ten years. I’ve been part of the digital marketing community since it’s earliest days. And I love it.
My husband has asked me to think about returning to freelance consultancy and small business marketing. I’m not going to lie, it’s both intriguing and terrifying. I’ll let you know what decision I make in a future intro to a playlist. LOL.
Three X Three
This week’s playlist launches with Dolly. There Spotify bio reveals almost nothing, except their assertion that they are “the fellowship of the guitar.” The LOTR reference earns them a few extra points. They create shoegazey, angst-riddled beauty in soundscapes that wrap your ears up in a warm blanket. It’s comfort music delivered delightfully. Even when the pace picks up, there’s a softness that envelops you. It’s a glorious feeling. Their latest releases come after seven years of silence, and I’m here for it. How about you?
Next up is Bisou Noir. They showed up on a recent Friday finds list, but I knew I needed to dig a little deeper. Initially the vocals remind me of 90’s alt-rock balladry. And I’m here for the nostalgia. For some reason Tonic pops into my head as a reference when listening to “Empty.” When the pace picks up, the nostalgia remains. It is dark and devastating, but there’s a ribbon of hope running through the track, as is the case with the best sad and reflective songs.
Batting third this week, we’ve got Oceanator. I’m a sucker for dual male/female shared vocal duties, and that’s what they deliver. I’m most impressed with the tracks that Elise Okusami fronts, and that’s backed up by my three selections. Her delivery is gorgeously straightforward, as is the power pop backdrop the music surrounds her with. “Cut String” is a song about unrequited love, delivered at speed.
The Playlists
That’s this week’s threesome. How’d you find it? Did you make any additions to one of your playlists? Will you be diving deeper into a discography after the initial listens? Let a girl know!
I went to check this out this AM; and started listening, and was thinking 'this all sounds familiar, has she posted all of these before? ' and realized that I was on the August Three for Thursday list. 😜 Learn To Drive was great especially 'Too Much Coffee' which was the exact opposite of my problem at 530.
Then I switch over to this list. Oceanator was my fave here, especially 'Part Time'. As she was singing the line about "I'm getting a puppy / I'm taking a walk" Gypsy (our dog who is the reason I am up at 530 AM) hops off the couch and starts on her "isn't it about time we go explore the neighborhood" dance.
