On Thursdays we threepeat!
I’m diving right in this week, as I’m trying to get ALL the work on my to-do list done so I don’t have to work over my Christmas vacation. Can I do it? Here’s hoping.
The playlist launches with John Allred, a singer-songwriter out of Connecticut. I first heard “Just The Way It Is” via my Discover Weekly mix, after several days deep diving through folk and anti-folk playlists. Spotify delivered a gem with this recommendation. Emotive and angsty vocals. Delicate, but powerful guitar playing. It’s the perfect music to make you reflect on where you are, at that time, especially when listening to “Skeletons.”
Next up is Bee Blackwell, a self-described “indie rock menace” out of Austin, TX. “Blue” continues the contemplative vibe of the playlist, but with a decided indie rock vibe via the strumming guitar and the percussion that settles perfectly behind the vocals which build and swell until the conclusion. Listen for the keys on “Be Quiet and Drive,” and enjoy the moment while listening to Bee’s three tunes.
I’m closing the list out with The Evening Sons. “Superspreader” picks up the pace with jangly indie pop guitars and charmingly boyish vocals. While they’d easily fit in the with the sunny indie pop sphere of the west coast, these musicians hale from Brighton Beach, NY. Funnily enough, they did sign with a west coast label, though the bulk of their listens come from European locales. You can absolutely hear the influence of Cheap Trick and Big Star, but it’s not derivative or obvious. It’s just fun power pop.

I hope you find something new for your own playlist. Please let me know what you think. And, above all, enjoy the music. Happy Thursday!
“Indie rock menace?” Yes please! Diving into the list after lunch here.
