Good morning. Hopefully this post actually get published WELL before noon today. No technology glitches needed today, please and thank you!
Having been involved in a lot looking-back listening over the last month or two, I thought it was high time to return to the roots of this publication, focusing on new and new-to-me music.
Let’s dive right in!
Five Bands, Two Tracks Each
This week’s five bands/artists are all new-er and definitely new to me.
UR SO: With only two singles available on Spotify, this duo is absolutely a new listen. I like the combination of boredom-laced verses with the faster, more emotional delivery on the chorus. It’s catchy without trying too hard. The production is solid, but not overblown. Just like I like it!
Ellur: I enjoy a variety of vocal styles. I don’t need perfect pitch. I prefer emotion. And this artist showcases both great control and high emotion. I love her husky delivery and power. Hope you enjoy this Canadian songstress.
The Sherlocks: These guys have a larger following than the first two artists on today’s playlist, but I’m well past my years where more popular releases got the side-eye. While they’re British, they’ve got a Gaslight Anthem vibe. It’s new rock for the hard working class, which includes so many of us these days. Apparently they’re incredible live, so if they travel through your town, you might want to catch a show!
Pearly*: There’s not a lot of information shared on their Spotify profile. So I’ve got to share from my gut here. It’s noisy, sludgy, dark, gritty indie rock with dual male/female lead vocals.
Bad Tomato: How can you skip past that band name? I couldn’t. The trio create noisy, grungy, dirty guitar sounds with more talking than singing vocals. The music is great, but the lyrics are what really drew me in. They’re absurd, funny, and witty. I love a good turn of phrase and tongue-in-cheek humor. These guys deliver!

There you go. Some new and new-to-me listens after several weeks of flashbacks and nostalgia-laced listening. Did anything in particular stand out and/or grab your ear? Let me know. I love seeing your comments. And your suggestions!
Big yes to UR SO and Ellur. Her voice reminds me of someone else but I can’t quite place it.
The Sherlocks are indeed excellent live. I caught their headline show in Bristol last year and saw them supporting Kaiser Chiefs the year before. People Like You and Me is a strong album (fave track Going Nowhere) but I prefer 2022’s World I Understand which is great from start to finish. Must-listens are Falling and City Lights. Chasing Shadows from their first album is another great track worth checking out.
Great playlist, as always. Thanks, Mallie!
