Happy Tuesday and Happy October. It’s still warm and muggy in the Atlanta metro, but I’m hopeful cooler, drier temperatures are just around the corner.
On Tuesdays I focus on new and new-to-me music discovery. Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Two Songs Each From New & New-To-Me Artists
This week’s listens come from both my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and the deep dives into similar artists gathered from artist “radio” playlists.
Normally I keep the list to ten songs, but I found so many great listens this week, I’m going to test a longer playlist to see how it fares.
This week’s list launches with Jenno. Their bio states that their music is “visceral, poignant, and unsettling,” and I concur. It’s moody, dark, and mesmerizing.
Next we get a little louder and more energetic with schnatz. I love punk pop and power pop, and “MY FRIEND SAYS” absolutely fits the bill. There’s just enough grit in the lead singer’s vocals to make it stand out and resonate.
Moving on, up comes Thank You, I’m Sorry. As with many of the artists I discover, there’s not a whole lot of information in their Spotify bio. I love the lead singer’s vocals. Delicate, but not wispy or waifish. There’s a peppy pop vibe that juxtaposes the introspective vocals, especially on “Car Sick.”
Onward and forward to The Unbranded. They pump up the pace again, and it’s power pop delivered with punk abandon. There’s deeper meaning behind the riffs, as exhibited on “Habit,” though it was “Novacaine” that first caught my ear! It’s so catchy!
John Davis is up next. It’s more riff-riddled pop punk delivered at a peppy pace, but the vocals are what stood out to me at first listen (and second, and third). There’s singer/songwriter sensibility mixed with the speed and sonic onslaught.
Next up, we return to female-fronted focus with Palomino Blonde. They’re not new to my playlists, but their recent singles reminded me I needed to put them in the discovery spotlight. I’d describe the sound as a mix of shoegaze and hard rock, which might seem odd. But it’s delivered, and delivered well, especially on “Understand.”
Moving into more keys and electronic delivery, check out Blame My Youth. It won’t surprise you that the vocals grabbed me. But the music drives the vocals for a seamless sound. This isn’t the type of music I usually vibe with, but all this discovery is expanding my already eclectic tastes.
We’re finishing up this week’s list with The Jack Knives. I get a bit of a Smithereens mixed with The Gaslight Anthem vibe. It’s compelling. It’s storytelling. It’s gritty and raw, but polished and pretty in a rough way. Both “Are You Alright” and “Ghost Radio,” gained my immediate attention and approval, prompting a deeper dive and some more new listens based on their radio station (more on that in future publishes).
The Playlists
That’s this week’s Two For Tuesday playlist and write-up done and dusted. Did you find anything new for your own playlists? How about the length of the playlist. Should I keep it to five bands, ten songs going forward? Or is the occasional longer list a good thing when I’ve found so many must listens?
Really digging the tracks by Jenno! There’s a bit of Liz Phair in their voice.
I thought about sending you a song yesterday. “Out Of The Blue” by Katie Pruitt. I just discovered her and that song is so damn good, especially as it builds and builds, all the little nuances…so good!
