Sometimes, while you’re searching out new music, you come across something that stops you in your tracks, forcing a more dedicated and deeper listen. That happened recently with the Scottish band, Wrest, and I showcased them in a group post.
I’ve come to realize that finds like that deserve more. So I’m launching a new theme, What I’m Hearing, to showcase those really great finds. Don’t worry, Wrest will get a starter list to make up for it, soon.
John-Allison Weiss
This artist is not new, they are a new-to-me find. They’ve been part of the indie scene since the early 2000’s. I stumbled upon them during a late night, insomnia-fueled listening session. And I was hooked.
I was instantly intrigued upon hearing “Different Now.” It’s peppy and poppy, but there’s a pragmatic portrayal of every day life delivered via the lyrics. The guitars are sometimes jangly, sometimes fuzzy and distorted. Sometimes they roar, as in “Motorbike.” Sometimes they more gently frame the vocals, as they do with “Say What You Mean” and “Young Love.”
Yes, the vocals have changed with their latest releases. But it’s not my job to share their transition journey. I’m here to share some stellar listens that I hope you’ll add to your liked lists and share with your avid listening friends and family.
I dare you not to become reflective after listening to “The Long Way.”
