I’m not sure how my first Maccabees listen came about. I’m not sure exactly when they entered my listening sphere. But I was hooked pretty easily.
I was hooked by the vocals by the incredibly talented Orlando Weeks. And the sense of fun around simpler topics. Songs like “Toothpaste Kisses” and “Latchmere,” which is about a wave machine at a water park. I liked the fun, the simple enjoyment, though the music and vocals are anything but simple.
I’m sad they called it quit after four albums. I’m happy Orlando is releasing solo material, but it’s not the same draw for me. His voice is still gorgeous, but the musical vibe isn’t the same. It’s sad, but it happens.

What say you? Maccabees fans, did I do the band justice with this ten song compilation? What about those new to the Maccabees? Did you make any additions to your liked lists?
I'd never heard of The Maccabees, so thanks. Unique and very cool.
I’ve never really given The Maccabees enough listening really. They passed me by at the time and I’ve just never gone back. I’m struck by how representative they are of mid-aughts “indie” bands for want of a better word. They fit in very nicely with the likes of Maximo Park and The Pigeon Detectives. I really enjoyed this selection and particularly liked the last three.
