The Pet Shop Boys have recorded some outstanding covers throughout their career and this is one of my favourites along with Always On My Mind and Somewhere, from West Side Story. Theirs is my version of choice this week although I enjoyed them all.
With the caveat that you're not a fan of post-1989 U2, I recommend checking out the video of Streets from the PopMart tour (the Mexico City concert is the official one and has great audio). It's still clearly the band playing the traditional song, but you can hear added dance elements in the rhythm and supporting synths. I have to imagine some of the PSB version influenced this.
